How to look for books by using the catalog

The link to the WebCat is located in the box labeled "Web Catalog".  When you click on this, it will open up the webpage to CCLINC - Communitiy Colleges Libraries in North Carolina. Find a link for Sampson Community College listed in alphabetical order. Clicking on this link it will open to the catalog for SCC's library.

When viewing the catalog, notice the drop down tab that says library.  Choose Sampson to browse for books in that library. (Please notice that other school's libraries are listed. It is possible to search materials within another library by selecting a different library or by selecting "ALL".)  You will also notice another drop-down tab that will allow you to search by "word or phrase", "author", "title", "subject", "series", and "periodical". Select the field you are searching for. In the blank search field, type in an authors name, title or word/phrase,etc.  and click on the search button. After clicking on "Search", books by that author, with that title, or featuring that word will be listed. Browse until you find the book/material needed.

The catalog not only has books listed, but other materials that are located in your library. The library has DVDs, VHS tapes, audio books, magazines, and newspapers.

How to renew books

Not many students/patrons are aware that they can renew their materials online, without having to do it at the library. This can be done by using the accessing the library's catalog online. (If you do not know how to get to the catalog, please note the box above to find out.)

Above the search box, there are blue links above (Search/Home, Find it Fast!, I Need Material, Reserve Desk, and My Account). To renew your library book, click on "My Account".  When clicking on this, notice three more links. (Review My Account, User PIN Change, and Renew My Materials). Click on "Renew My Materials". After clicking on this just put in your "User ID", which is your identifaction number on your ID card (students, faculty and staff) or your library card (community patrons). Leave the "Alternate ID"and "PIN" fields blank. Click on "List Charged Items".  Select the items you want to renew and click on "Renew Selected Items". After clicking on this it will renew your items. Please note the changed date the items are due.

Please note that materials that are already overdue cannot be renewed online.

How to use interlibrary loan-ILL

ILL or interlibrary loan is used to get access to materials that the library does not own but which you need for research.  This can be done through the catalog.

Search for the title, word, or author you need and make sure that the library field is changed to "ALL" instead of "Sampson". Click search and browse through all the libraries that have that item. Click on the item that you want from a different library.

For example, you are searching for "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" because your library does not have it. Cleveland has a copy. Click on the copy.

When clicking on the link for the copy it will take you to "Item Information". Look at the information to make sure it is the right copy. To the left of "Item Information", is "Item Details". Notice the list of links. Listed among those links, should be "Place Hold", click on this. After clicking on this it will open to the "Place Hold" page. It is necessary to only fill out two fields, "User Identification" and "Pickup at". Put in your ID number (on the back of your Sampson Community College ID or your library card). Click on the down tab for "Pickup at" and change to "Sampson". Lastly, click on the blue "Place Hold" button.

The library will notify you when your hold has been delivered and is ready to pick up

How to place a hold

Sometimes it is nice to place a hold a book that the library has but is not available due to being checked out by another patron. Placing a hold is exacting the same as ILL except you are searching only for material in Sampson Community College.

For example, you are looking for the title, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerors Stone" in the catalog. Type the title in the search box and make sure that the drop-down tab for library is "Sampson". It comes up that the library has the book but it is already checked out. Place a hold to ensure that you will be the next to check out the book. You will be notified by the library staff as soon as the book is available.
